Mods

all stock, I like the stealth mode that comes with the stock exhaust.

Carberation

Why mess with perfection? (all stock parts)

Brakes

Very nice. No Complaints

Handling

140 hp at 420 lbs makes for an extremely light front end, I cant even toy-around with light-to-light drag-racing without the front wheel launching vertically. And the steering is so light, I feel like Im riding a bicycle.

Comments

comfort is so-so, but "its better to look good, than to feel good"!!!

No modifications "none needed"

Carberation

Tons of power all over the tachometer. You can ride the twisties all day long and rarely have to down shift for more power. Throddle control is a must when cornering, because the power is istantanious and will upset the bike.

Brakes

braking is on par for street applications. A handfull is more than the average street rider will ever use, but a road racer would probably want more initial bite.

Handling

handling is excelent. This bike requires no effort to turn in. I find myself wanting to slide my butt off the seat or throw my knee out in the turns but it's just not neccessary. It also feels more stable than heavier bikes I've ridden. However, under hard exceleration it will shake its head at you.

Comments

I rode the first generation R1 in "98" and I was not impressed. It was uncomfortable offered no wind protection and had tons of power but you couldn't use it. With the modifications done in 2000 I now belive this is the ultimate sportbike. saeting position and wind protection are decent and you can use the horse-power for more than just wheelies. Not to mention it is the prettiest thing on two wheels since the 916. However the R1 is not a bike for beginers. My previous bike was a 2000 ZX-9r and the R1 is light years ahead as far as performance.

no modifications, all stock, ALL AWESOME!

Carberation

No flat spots, all out from the first twist of the trottle!

Brakes

Brakes are great just touch them with two fingers and your stopped!

Handling

Handling is ok!A bit light in the front end,but great for riding them long wheelies! Can just about lean it all the way over, flat on the pavement and will hold its own!

Comments

The Yamaha YZF R-1 is the ultimate superbike ever created by man!But it is not for beginners, has way too horsepower and torgue for an unexperienced rider! And can easily get away from you with just a twist of the go fast throttle! When this 2001 is paid off I will purchase another one!Wish I would of bought one years ago!You can never have too many R-1s!

Mods

No mods at this time but getting ready to install slip on. Stock exhaust sounds like my old Puch.

Carberation

Bike is super light and has great acceleration through all gears.

Brakes

I recently had the opportunity to test the brakes when I almost ate the ass end of a car pulling out in front of me, so I guess I'd say they work pretty damn good.

Handling

The bike corners pretty well.

Comments

The real flaw I would have to say with this bike is the gear-box. It's not the smoothest shifting bike out there. Other than that, it's a great bike.

Carberation

A small stumble at 7G but awsome power pick the front wheel up through 4th gear throtle only.

Brakes

Only ridin one other bike that came close and it was a 93 GXXr.

Handling

cant make it let go of the road extremely stable except when stock pipe high centers and picks the rear wheel off the ground causeing bad lowside.

Comments

Bike was awsome but got hit by a drunk driver in LA bummed up my leg. Not giving up though already put down payment on a 2002 should be getting it at the end of dec or begining of Jan Just in time for me to heal up.

Carberation

Awesome power outta the crate! Throttle wheelies are almost accidental. This bike need no mods (but I couldnt resist). Carbs act kinda freaky with full exhaust - rejetting needed.

Brakes

Great brakes. Braided lines help a bit. Stoppies galore!

Handling

Best handling bike on the market. Enter a corner too fast and the bike dares you to go even faster! It begs you to lean farther and farther.

Comments

Dont make the mistake of buying an R1 first as this bike demands respect - act a fool, and it will throw you. Will also highlight all your downfalls too. Hands down, the fastest, best handling bike on the market. Wins any beauty contest south of a 996. Simply the best value on the market.

any flat spots etc.with the Drag Pack, re-jetting was a necessity. although it is slightly rich low-end, there is not 1 flat spot ANYWHERE.

Brakes

Feel, Strength stunning... box stock

Handling

as said previously, it reminds me of my '96 ZX6R. this bike begs you to test your cornering abilities. theres nothing like getting up-close and personal with the macadam and power-wheelieing out of a tight corner.

Comments

ive owned many bikes over the years. some being an '87 CBR600F, '93 Gixxer 750, '96 ZX6R and my beloved '98 CBR900RR. ive always had a soft spot for my RR as it took me a little while to finally get one. the moment i saw the R1, i was salivating. the looks, style, performance, power, brakes... EVERYTHING! is simply breathtaking. there's nothing like riding the most bad-ass bike on the street!

Carberation

Yes...when I bought this bike I decided already on beforehand to tune it a bit, because I always do. I should have known better, I lost the R1 almost in one of the first corners of my testdrive, before it was even tuned! But, still I recommend some minor tuning, because the bike really improves in the midrange, and it makes her a bit more smooth. It even saves fuel.

Brakes

Braking is among the best I have ever seen, although I expected some more bite during pressure build up.

Handling

I can't even feel the damned thing between my legs! It feels like a small airplane.

Comments

Beginners: Do not buy this bike yet, unless you are an accountant with a strange character feature. But also experienced drivers must be careful, before you know it the R1 does not only feel, but actually will be a small airplane!! Other than that, it is an awesome bike! The looks, the feel, everything is close to perfect!

Handling

This bike runs on rails around corners, stock back tyre could be updated for a bit more grip.Never tank slapped this bike but lighter riders may require a steering damper.

Brakes

front brake is very powerful and progressive (one to two fingers is all that is needed) rear is a bit spongy but will bite.

Handling

Yoshi Tri-oval slip-on, Fender eliminator kit, Scotts Steering Damper and HeliBars

Carberation

Fantastic power, just a bit of a flat spot at around 5000rpm. Pure honey from there until redline! I've heard good things about the Graves velocity stacks to smooth this out. My next add-on.

Brakes

Feel, Strength - Fabulous front brakes. One finger operation and nice modulation. These thigs haul you down NOW! Rear brake works great.I don't use it much on the street.

Handling

A great combination of stability and flickability. THe Scotts Steering damper keeps the front end pointed in the right direction as the front wheel skims the ground during acceleration. The damper is a highly recommended accessory, probably mandatory for track use. If you ride hard, buy a damper you will not regret it.

Comments

Just an amazing bike. Great power, handling and what a sexy looking bike, especially when you take all the junk off from under the rear fender. I ride this bike through the canyons of S. California and it performs flawlessly. IT's very fast, fun and a cofidence building ride. What I didn't like was the factory clip-ons.I had a lot of pain and numbing in my wrists and hands due to the odd angle of the factory clip-ons. The Helibars are infinitely more comfortable and do not effect the handling in any negative way. They also reduced vibration through the bars. A truly great bike! I give it a 9+++.Nothings a 10 out there without some tweaking. And then there's the next model... Alexjoz@aol.com

Arrow race pipe. WP Racing steering dampener, radgard (radiator gaurd), Metzeler Mtec 1 tyres.

Carberation

The injection is very precise. It feels much better that the previous carby models.(not so aggresive as the previous models) Very smooth power curve. Although when it hits around 3,500 it has a nice kick, due the the arrow pipe i'd say.

Brakes

Fornt barakes are fantastic, very touchy. (alittle too touchy for my liking) Rear bracks are useless. You really need to slam them to get them to work.

Handling

The bike handles really well, although the bike tends to pull pull wide due to the steering dampener on the second half of the corner. But by winding the dampener down it tends to hold a good line.

Comments

All in all the bike feels great and looks great. With the right set up on the bike. Tyre pressures, dampening, spring rating, ect ect. You have a great track or street monster. Yamaha YEAH YEAH

any flat spots etc. Fuel injection best I've ever sampled. My previous bike was an '01 GSXR750 which was acclaimed for it's fuel injection when it was released, the R1 embarrases the GSXR in this respect, absolutely flawless! 10/10

Brakes

Feel, Strength Brakes awesome. Less ferocious than previous R1s but still plenty of power and feel. Stoppies with two fingers on brake, no problems. 9.5/10

Handling

Quicker steering than lighter GSXR, but no damper...yet. A little bit unstable over rougher roads, not scary but enough to stop you pushing harder. No big slappers yet only wriggles and squirms. Heaps of ground clearance and feels good when leaned right over. Also gets the power on smoothly thanks to spot-on fuel injection. Good feedback too so you feel when it starts to slide and it's a gradual affair no sudden break-outs to soil your pants! 9/10

Comments

The horniest looking Japanese motorcycle ever! Have nearly crashed a few times just looking at the bike's reflection in shop windows as I ride along LOL! This bike is a complete package. On the previous R1 you were awestruck by the motor and forgave it's handling shortcomings, but the new model is excellent in all areas. Great fun on the road (although a bit uncomfortable and fuel economy is poor) and even better at the track when you know the surface is good. Chasing a friend on his GSXR100 (with end can and 20kg lighter rider) I could keep with him on all the straights if I stayed in his slipstream and could stuff him under brakes every time, then once past could pull ground on him quite easily. The new R1 makes going fast very easy.

List the modifications on this bike Devil exhaust slipon, Graves Ram air kit with jetting, ignition timing advancer, goodridge kevlar brakelines, euro tail, Ollins steering damper, Chrome everything (laughing)

Carberation

After installing Graves ram air kit, timing advancer, and new header from devil for the slipon (exup system died) The bike became a fire breathing dragon easily clearing up the nasty flat spot I had in the midrange. 3rd gear power wheelies are par for the course. and acceleration improved, in my humble opinion 100% the bike just flat out flies. If your lookin to get more bang for your buck I suggest these slight mods the cost to effect ratio cant be beat

Brakes

The brakes where eye popping when stock. but after a day of tearing up my local freeways and stoppies at the lights for the kiddies. the stock boys felt a lil spongy a quick fix was changing the brake lines. The Groodridge Kevlar lines dried up the sponge feel and this puppy stops on the dime every time.

Handling

At first when I got the bike in 99 coming off the 95 gixxer1100 dinosaur the bike felt nervous but once I got accustomed to my new baby, the R1 feels like a Ginso knife it just shreds the comers like my gixxer wished it could

Comments

This bike isn't for everyone especially my yrs version I've herd the complaints.. Its too light, its too small, no wind protection..blah blah blah. Well after 4yrs and many miles the only thing that even comes close is the NEW gixxer1k I even like my R1 over the latest edition Yammies..but hey that's me. Over all this is a well made and powerful bike which changed the standards Yeah the new suzzy Q's are a lil more ballsy but I look so good passing them in the turns no other bike can give you that confidence in the turns like the Yammy. So all you biker bums out there if you want to go fast going straight only..buy the suzzy, But if your passion is laying it down in the turns ala Duhamel or Biagi style grab the yammy

Carberation

Awesome power! BUT, the power is VERY sensitive to heat. Once the bike is above 175, power fades quickly. With an engine temp around 155-165, it'll bring the front up with no clutch, but above 175 degrees, I have to clutch it BIG time.

Brakes

OK, not great. I've ridden Gixxer1000, RC51 and 929RR - all had much better brakes. The R1's brakes aren't horrible, by any means, just not as good as the competition's.

Handling

Very good, but fairly heavy feeling. I will be trashing the D207s and mounting either Metzeler M1s or Pilot Sports to see if it gets a bit more responsive (again, the hondas and Suzuki were much quicker turn ins -even the RC51!).

Comments

Great power over all. Was quicker than my bud's 01 Gixxer1000 -until he added some mods. gear box isn't so good....really clunky compared to others. Definitely not a beginner's bike. I won't let anyone touch it if they don't ride at least a newer 750 sportbike.

The power is very smooth all the way through the RPM range. It idles pretty rough though which may be expected on the R1. The fuel injection works nicely. There's more power than I'll ever need but its nice to have. The bike just wants to go fast all of the time.

Brakes

Brakes work fine. They're even and solid.

Handling

Handling is where this bike pays off. It's amazingly easy to ride. It just coaxes you to lay down in turns and rights itself when you need it to.

Comments

This is my first R1 and I love it. Yamaha did a great job overall. Some people complain about the comfort of the riding position, but I think its very comfortable. It has a little bit more of a raw almost "naked" or unfinished look that makes it which I happen to like. Some may like the more refined finishing that Honda and Suzuki put into their bikes. If it's overall performance, handling, and styling you're concerned with, I think the R1 offers it all.

Bike is so quick (had a 2000 R1 prev. nowhere near as good as 02/03 models)and even quicker after being geared down@rear.smoother delivery compared to 1998-2001 model.Feels like a well setup carbed bike without the glitchy feel of a carbed bike and without the on-off switch kinda feel injection bikes used to give (GSXR750WW). Suppose I've lost 10-15mph on top end but boy even though still running it in, I have managed to power wheelie in first@4,000 and in the wet first and second spin the rear with no effort. Maybe gearing down 1 tooth instead of 2 would be safer but I love how lively my 03 is.

any flat spots etc. Power Commander 3 is strong all throughout the range

Brakes

Feel, Strength Front Brakes are excellent. Rear brake is good but could be a little better

Handling

Best Feeling Bike I've ridden compared to gsxr 1000, cbr 954, zx 9-r. Handles likes its on rails The R1 is known for this.

Comments

Awesome bike - very solid power but not so much lightning switch like the gsxr 1000 - it's either on or off. The R1 is much smoother out of turns and more predictable on the throttle, yet no slouch either.

very good braking

Handling

this baby handles like a 600 class bike

Comments

this thing is such a beast i cant wait to break it in. The enginge on this thing is like yamaha's racing engine so you have to follow the break in prosedure or it wont be as powerful as it is so post to be

micron full race titanium slip on

Carberation

exup giving a lot of grief but other than that this thing power-wheelies without trying. loads of horseys when you need then and even when you dont.

Brakes

the harder you push them the better they seem to work. stop you on a sixpence.

Handling

bit light on the front end but they all seem to be like that. steering damper a necessity not an extra. its very sensitive to tyre pressures. to low and feels like its fighting you but when correct then its a beauty.

Comments

other than the EXUP problems that have plagued mine from very early on then this an excellant bike. a motogp bike with lights. keeping a license is your onlr concern

I've had a 86 Ninja 600, 89 GSX-R 750, 90 GSX-R 1100 and 2000 CBR929RR. And this bike is amazing!! I have ZERO complaints. And it's a real head turner

Carberation

So far I am still breaking the bike in. However i do have a flat spot between 2500 and 4000 RPM. Notably due to the change in exhaust, I plan on remapping the F.I. after the 600 mi service. Power Commander if needed. Other than that this bike is explosive. Power is awesome below 7000 but once you hit 7 and up it is like you hit a nitrous button. I had a 99 R1 with full exhaust, jet kit K&N and #45 sprocket in the rear. Dynoed at 144.6 to the tire. The 04 makes that bike feel like a punk. Fuel Injection is awesome. Especially if you know how to work a lap top. GSX-R lovers, Try to keep up!

Brakes

Brakes felt awkward at first. Probably cause they are larger than my 99 and have more initial bite. But once accustomed to them, they are superb. Very smooth and responsive. The only bike I have ridden with this much bite was the 03 GSX-R1000. Haven't had enough time to really work them hard yet.

Handling

Nothing like my 99. Not to say that it is much better because I loved my 99, but it is sicnificantly different. Far less effort is need to throw from one side to the other. Out of habbit and riding style I almost alway slide off the seat and go down with the knee, but I am finding that with this bike it is really not necessary. Though I have a track session scheduled for next month and I will be able to determine more there.

Comments

When you have that once in a life time chance to drop 13 large on a brand new bike, (once in a life time for most of us anyway) the choices suddenly become much more difficult. Especially this year with all of the top four liter bikes coming to bat so aggressively. This is my 6th bike and I have owned three of the the four. All except a Kawi. Don't really like Green. Though I have ridden all. Actually I almost opted to buy a used Duc 996. But in the end it was again the R1 that brought me home. There is just not another bike that is as sexy in appearance and depending on riding skill I have been hard pressed to find anyone in my area that can out carve me on a Duc. Not to mention 159 HP to the back tire from the factory. With current mods and after remap should be close to 170. Need I say more!

Handling is excellent it corners better than I do.

BUY A 2002 R1, This is my first street bike and I would highly recommend the R1 to anybody. Awesome choice for a beginner that doesn't have a death wish. Very easy to ride fast or slow. Ride it like a human and it won't hurt you. My YZ-250 dirtbike is much more dangerous to a beginner. Ladies Love this bike. (I do plan on going 3 up on rear sprocket and possibly 1 down on front in the future for more zip.)

Carberation

no flat spots at all, very smooth and powerful, suits lighter people, not as heave as other bikes of its class.

Brakes

Feel, Strength, good response

Handling

great on curves, should through your weight to front when accelerating if u don't wanna end up doing an unexpected wheelie, as the bike is light from the front.

Comments

I would say it's a very good bike to start with for some one who got the balls to start with that power.

Mods

Renegade can, Scotts damper, sintered front brakes. Next step; power commander or high mount exhaust.

Carberation

I bought this bike used with 9,000miles. Still I have heard so many horror stories about how powerful it is which made me a little intimidated being that I hadn't ridden in 2 yrs. Even then I was playing around on a 99' zx6r. The bike is without a doubt a force to be reckoned with.

Brakes

Being that I bought the bike used I wanted the security of knowing that I was riding on the new stuff. So I bought some sintered brakes for the front end. I don't really the back ones.

Handling

The Scotts damper is cherry. Almost a necessity.

Comments

Never ride as a new rider. There is just too much power.

Mods

None so far... none really needed. But planning to install Yoshimura slip-on.

Carberation

Definitely a bike that is nothing but throttle and stealth! The R1 is the embodiment of the perfect Japanese sportbike. Begs for more and more power at any RPM's!!

Brakes

Braking is great and very responsive. Any amatuer that does not know about R1 braking will go flying off guaranteed if not carefull.

Handling

Light, responsive, and as everyone else has said, it definitely inspires confidence once you get on it. My R1 was the first street bike I ever got on and immediately felt connected to the machine. I then tried Gixxers, CBR's, and Ninjas, but none felt as right as the R1.

Comments

Definitely the best value for the money you will pay, hands down!! The styling is the best out there, it gets the most looks, and not to mention the best performance...period! This was my first bike and I learned to ride on it. It was the scariest thing I've done and I do not recommend anyone to use this as their first bike unless they are willing to put their ego aside and treat it with utter respect because this bike is for those with balls. After an R1 you won't want anything else!

Mods

Polished frame, untertail with integrated signals, Yoshi Pipe, sprocket set.

Carberation

Its my first bike and however I would never recommend it do to a steep learning curve. Its actually a very easy bike to ride and you can progress easily only if you resist giving some gas. Made 10,000 flawless miles in my first season.

Brakes

Great with no fade but feel a little spongy. Stainless lines are in the works.

Handling

Stock settings are almost perfect for my size however just in turns feels a little soft. Also to bike shows no limit to how low in a turn you can go. But I'm not going to test that out!

Comments

Could have a better feeling tranny and more intake sound.

Carbon exhaust. Everything else Stock

Carberation

Not 1 single flat spot. 1st gear isn't all that special (still can go above 70mph it 1st gear). but shift to 2nd and up, and the bike just fly's!! Incredible Power and Torque in all gear's. Very smooth carburetion.

Brakes

Pin point stopping power. Stoppie's with ease if you want. Nothing to complain about here.

Handling

Basically just think of 150hp strapped to ur body, and it will do whatever u want, whenever u want it to. It's basically an extension of your body, and has amazing turning capability, and u never feel nervous or afraid. The biks is very light and doesn't feel like a liter bike when you ride it a few time's. Best liter bike made!!!

Comments

I was going like 35mph behind 2 cars on a straight away, and i was in 3rd gear just cruising at very low rpm's, and i just flicked the throttle and i was passed the 2 cars and i was going about 85 in what seemed like 2 seconds. It has THAT kind of power and torque. U won't be disappointed in any way with the bike other than it doesn't like to be ridden slow in 1st gear because it's VERY throttle sensitive. But who care' about that?! EXCELLENT BIKE!! Ride's like a 600, with the power of the best liter bike. That make's an incredible motorcycle.

Only steel braided lines. -Although the brakes were absolutely amazing with out...

Carberation

Carberation from 5000 and up is crisp. Power delivery is smooth and strong. Although my particular bike I assume is a little rich in the bottom end. A slight adjustment with the air fuel screws should clear it up somewhat

Brakes

The braking on this bike is superb. Two fingers on the binders at 240 will send you over the top. Watch out!!!

Handling

My R1 reminds me of my older Kawi 6R. Light and nimble. It is stable and tracks well no matter what your entry speed into a corner. Lean angles are mind blowing. This bike provides a confident and stable feel at any speed.

Comments

In my opinion the R1 is a fantastic bike. If power and cornering is your thing this is the bike for you. Have respect riding this bike it provides you with a overconfident feeling because it is sooo smooth and stable. You will find yourself in situations that you may not be ready for. The only downfall of this bike is a VERY clunky gearbox and a pretty noisy engine. My particular bike is also on its second oil pressure sensor. Nobody seems to know why it is faulty. Not the most comfortable bike for the long hauls but when all you can say is wow wow wow who cares.

Avon tires dumped the crappy d208s, rear license plate on hinge, other than that she's a stocker

Carberation

Holy Crap beats my old 00 cbr 600f4, thanks to exup flap 3400 rpm to 4000rpm laggs but wheelies good out of 4000rpm with a half turn of throttle holds up till redline, mega awesome smooth even hp and torque all the way to redline. Wow Wow Wow

Brakes

Touchy front brakes, but smooths at high speeds, rears good but not like fronts. Brakes don't fade at all

Handling

awesome better on avons sport tires than crappy short life dunlop 208s, excellent in sharp tight leans, frim responsive makes confidence, light front end, electronic steering dampener would be good upgrade (un wanted tank slappers and such)

Comments

Awesome power, best looking 2002 crotch rocket ever, best bang for buck, don't reccomend putting d208s on it though, super smooth engine feels so much better than any 600 ever will. Highly recommend first time 1000cc buyers to get this bike.

Completely chromed out, polished frame, ported and polished heads, graves motorsport cam shaft, ohlins steering damper, carbon fiber ram air box, euro tail, full akrapovic exhaust, rejetted and remapped.

Carberation

168 Horsepower on Nettec racing fuel and 158 on regular 87 octane. When I can keep it on the ground the mid range and upper end power on this bike is unreal.

Brakes

Braking feels good.

Handling

This bike handles like a dream. I have owned a Honda and 2 Kawasaki's and this bike by far out handles both.

Comments

This is the hardest pulling bike through every gear I have ever ridden. The only bike I can compare it to was a 1993 GSXR 1100 that was completely built and stretched out. SCARY

Brakes

good feel , but it is about time for some pads

Handling

it use to handle lovely but front end is starting to step out alittle on me (i think that it needs new steering head bearrings)

Comments

it is a good bike, the motor is real strong. i can usely get a little ahead of the newer bike until like 165- 170, then the newer bikes will come around me.
