Dunlop D208ZR Review

  • Tire: D208
  • Name: Darren
  • Bike: 2000 F4
  • Rating: 10

Surface

Type of surface tested on. Temp. Weather Conditions Wet Dry and cold and warm street riding

Grip

The grip is only a step behind what I feel was Dunlops best tire the D364 I rode that tire and now ride the 208GP's and love them amazing grip in all but the coldest weather.

Stability

Stability etc.extremely stable at all speeds city hiway etc

Handling

Quick or slow to lean in or react to changes.Very predictable and manageable

Comments

This tire is just incredible but it costs you alot due to the fact it wears quite quickly after only 3000K I am almost to the wear bars in the centre and the sides are shot this is just from street riding. I have to say they are wel worth the money though

Surface

Type of surface tested on. Temp. Weather Conditions Mostly aggressive street and highspeed highway with maybe 50-60miles a month in a top secret development with all paved streets and no houses. temps ranging from mid 80's to 105 here in Fla.

Grip

The level of grip on the tires is good an slippage only becomes apparent after a thorough beating.

Stability

Stability etc. I'm not sure if it's an R1 problem or not but the OEM 208s began to cup after 2k miles running pressures of 34f 34r. It has also been noted on other R1's

Handling

Quick or slow to lean in or react to changes. Being that the stock rear is a 190 it's sort of a moot point on lean in . But it is a confident tire at angles, but being pushed by an R1 it's not to hard to be backing it in.

Comments

In general, I would'nt purchase this tire again. It is thoroughly destroyed at 3400miles and the front is as cupped as cupped can be. Given the cost to benefit ratio the frugal rider would be better off with a set of Pilot sports or M1's. All that said I did love the 207's on my 01 R1'. Look closely at the 207 and the 208 and the 190 of each. The 207 appears much wider than the same size 208.

Surface

Type of surface tested on. asphalt Temp.85deg Weather Conditions clear w/low humidity

Grip

Total confidence while cornering. Accelerates without any wheel-spin.

Stability

Tall curves at 135mph are full of confidence, but a little soft flipping back and forth on short corners.

Handling

Medium reaction leaning to and fro.

Comments

This is my third set of 208's. I've ridden with the pilots and battle-axes, and these give me the most confident feel.

Surface

Type of surface tested on. Temp. Weather Conditions...Asphalt (south florida conditions)

Grip

It grips very well, heats up quick and never spins while accelerating.

Stability

Very smooth and stable tire, has a comfortable feel.

Handling

Handles very well, I am confident in it's handling except that in sharp turns at about 70-80 in gives the bike a little hop in the corner but still never looses grip.

Comments

I would purchase this tire again although I am nearing 300 miles on it and it is pretty much shot but I would like to try something new maybee the new pirelli or a metzler.

Surface

multiple conditions, street sport riding

Grip

the tires didnt seem to heat as well on the street as the prevous 207. the 208's also lasted half as long as the 207's probobly because i lowered the pressures to 32 psi so they would heat faster. (i only got 3,000 miles out of the 208.

Stability

Gave good felling at higher pressures of 35psi front and 37 psi rear but lost feeling and became vague (to me) at lower pressure (32psi)which heated better.

Handling

Quick or slow to lean in or react to changes.

Comments

I liked the 207's better. and i like The sporteck M1's even better than that! but if you alread have 208's 35 and 37 psi worked best for me. (gave more felling) but be carful not to over heat them at that high of a pressure. i never did on the street riding them fairly hard, just be aware of it.

Surface

Los Angeles to Monterey, the fun route 58, when it was HOT HOT HOT.

Grip

Super sticky when ridden properly and properly inflated and warmed up. However they will slide if you don't ride like butter, but they will forgive you in the end.

Stability

I have experienced no stability issues that were caused by the tires themselves. Usually its is something like a bad mounting or balance job. However with the gearing on my bike I've only been up to 135 mph.

Handling

THe most predicable tires EVER made. Yes they slide easily when not up to temperature or when over powered but you can tell before it happens and they don't hi-side you when they grip back up, even when your in a two wheel panic slide because you miss judged the corner radius.

Comments

The ONLY reason this tire does not get a 10 is because it does slide more easily than it should.

Surface

City streets and highways

Grip

I'm very pleased with the grip!!!!! With the D207ZR the rear wheel would break loose. But with the D208ZR the front wheel comes up under the same condictions

Stability

I don't get the unsure feeling (loose feeling) like I did with the D207ZR's in corners.

Handling

This tire feels smooth and stable. I really like the way they ride.

Comments

This tire sticks! I don't have the racing tires (GP) but my tires the D208ZR's burn kind of like the race tires. My tires melt. If I ride at high speeds (175mph plus) for a few mile, and get off my bike and look at the rear tire they are melting and sticky like a race tire........... The only time I get up to these speed is if there is no traffic at all, and under perfect weather condition.

Surface

Type of surface tested on. Temp. Weather Conditions Race track. 75deg. sunny

Grip

Awsome grip. They never broke loose durring kneedragging corners or hard acceleration out of corners.

Stability

Stability etc. Great feedback

Handling

very good side to side transitions in the esses.

Comments

This tire on the track is just like a DOT race compound tire. Warms up quick. Gives great feedback but you can expect to hose a set of new tires in one race weekend

Surface

Type of surface tested on. Temp. Weather Conditions Mainly city driving with a few aggressive highway miles.

Grip

Grip is amazing. Completely controlable under almost any condition. I can easly control a power slide and it sticks like crazy with a fast take off. You can almost lay the bike completely sideways in a turn and still have maximum grip

Stability

Smooth feel, very stable especially under hard cornering. but like mentioned the R1 has a very light front end contributing to the handling.

Handling

Handling is good, havent had experience with too many other tires but have had no complaints with this one.

Comments

Wear isnt too bad. My last rear tire lasted about 4800 miles. Could have easily gone 5000 without powerslideing and burnouts.

Surface

Real world riding condition from 45F-80F

Grip

Very poor in cold conditions had almost 3200 miles on the tires before they ever warmed up enough to feel remotely confident

Stability

Definitly a little jumpy at speed 75-125

Handling

slow to lean in not a confidence inspiring tire

Comments

Poor characteristics overall not going to recommend to other riders. The D207's were a much more solid tire very predictable and solid.

Surface

Type of surface tested on. Temp. Weather Conditions Blacktop, 42 F. Night Dry

Grip

Loved the stickiness of these tires when first purchased, however. I have had 2 seperate instances when first leaving with cold tires on a cool road, both times accelerating moderately and the rear tire started sliding resulting in moderate tank slappers both times. The bike was shaking bad enough to activate the crash switch and shut the engine off. Once warmed up the tires still seem fine, but I would like to see street tires retain a bit better cold grip with only 3000 highway miles on them.

Surface

Type of surface tested on. Temp. Weather Conditions: Between 55degrees - 106 degrees

Grip

The best gripping tire I have ridden on to date.

Stability

Stability etc. This tire makes you think that there is no limits to how far you can lean the bike, the tires never slipped once. It had good feedback, and comfortable ride for the most part. At higher speeds I thought they were a little "bumpy".

Handling

Quick or slow to lean in or react to changes. I think the tires were moderate on the lean in. When I came through some Esses, they seemed to take a little more work to get from one turn to the next. But with the extra confidence because of grip, no biggie.

Comments

This tire definately wears quickly. I took a 1,500 mile road trip with some friends for some high speed fun, and twisties. When I came back, I was through the wear marks, and the sides were melted pretty good. (But I never slipped) I think the tire is excellent, but I want to try the M1's next. I wonder if the M1's will handle the same as the R1 guys talk about, the CBR is 100 pounds heavier! It should be interesting!

Surface

Type of surface tested on. Temp. Weather Conditions:New England back roads,highways.Temp.between 40-100 degrees, wet and dry

Grip

grip felt good, once warmed up.When I cracked the throttle open, the tires always hooked up.They seem like a soft compound tire and much better than the D207'S.

Stability

tires always felt good on dry roads. Wet roads not as good.

Handling

D208'S are good performance tires for the twisty roads as well as a good rip down the highway. They are also good for the esses, giving you plenty of confidence for transitions at a fast speed.

Comments

My gixxer came stock with D207'S and only lasted 2500 miles.I bought D208'S and although they're better for riding, still got about the same results, twice! For my fourth set of tires (in not even three full riding seasons)I'll probably choose a different brand like pirelli or maxxis etc.

Surface

40-100 temp, rain, dry, all over the streets.

Grip

Grab the road like your life depends on it (because it does). They don't like to be pushed if you haven't warmed them up, but warm up is quick.

Stability

Good, solid tire. It felt like a whole new bike when I dumped the Battlax OEM tires.

Handling

Quick lean-in, but part of that is the bike, too. Very comfortable switching from side to side.

Comments

Horrid mileage on a great tire. I've burned through 3 rears in less than 9 months. Why do I keep buying them? Read everything above. I'd rate it a 10 if it got better mileage.

Surface

typical colorado weather 27 deg. to 98 deg.

Grip

outstanding, although I never try getting crazy until they warm up but I can lay over hard and not slide a bit pull up into a wheelie and go, they have been awesome in the tight switchbacks in the mountains, the only complaint is it feels like your hydro-planing when you get on the gravel or a dirt road but have never lost control.

Stability

very confident in these tires, warmed up they grip the road perfectly and have not felt anything rough about them but havent been over 135 mph on them yet.... SOON

Handling

Perfect on the buell very quick and responsive

Comments

as with any tire you get some you give some, if you want traction, you sacrifice mileage! personally I will take the traction

feels good at new slightly used rough doesn't lean well, bad cupping on front after 1200 miles

poor tire life, good grip for wheelies and tricks front tire cupps much to soon, poor wet weather traction, made me feel unsafe, prefer Avon tires

Tire is good when warm but not confidenc inspiring. Beware of tires grip on cool mornings I have tried 207s and now 208s not happy with either..

Stability

Stability etc. Vague at best not confident inspiring

Handling

Quick or slow to lean in or react to changes.

Comments

I have now tried both the 207 and 208 and am not impressed.. Switching to Powers then Diablos if those don't work..

Surface

Daily rider, this tire has seen all types of conditions, even some light snow (by accident of course)

Grip

When compared to other sportbike tires, i'd rate these as average at best. They definately take some time to warm up. In warm, dry conditions, they seem to do ok, but they are terrible in any sort of wet conditions.

Stability

Straight line tracking is pretty good, Although they do have a tendency to follow any groves in the pavement. As far as cornering, they have always felt squirmy to me. They do not inspire much confidence, and I have never felt comfortable leaning the bike way over with these tires.

Handling

Quick and nuetral steering when new, but that quickly faded away once the tires 1000 miles on them. THey now feel sluggist, and I can't wait to be rid of them.

Comments

I really can't think of much positive to say about these tires. They have always felt uncomfortable and squirmy, they have average levels of grip compared to other sport tires, and they have worn out after about 3000 miles. I certainly will not be buying these tires again, and with so many other good tire options out there, I don't know why anyone would want these. I can only hope that the new Dunlop qualifiers will fare better, otherwise my faith in dunlop tires is in the gutter for a long time.

Surface

Type of surface tested on. Dry and wet concrete. Temp.70-100 degrees Weather Conditions rain and sunny

Grip

The grip is poor on these tires loose in turns. Spins very easly on accel.

Stability

very loose not a confidence booster at all.

Handling

very slow to react

Comments

i feel this tire is junk doesnt grip unless its 100 degrees and you get the tire heated first. Life of the tire is poor also.
